Inspired by the concepts of “Emptiness” and “the Logic of Negation” as expounded in the Diamond Sutra, a classical Buddhist scripture, Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow merges elements of multimedia, live guitar performance and movements as well as upcycled music into a multimedia dance performance with the logic of negation. Jointly produced by Zuni Icosahedron (Hong Kong) and Dance Forum Taipei, Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow features Mathias Woo’s first-ever multimedia no-choreography, Ray Chen’s stage design of illusory dream-like “emptiness”, Yu Yat-yiu’s no-music, singer-songwriter Ellen Joyce Loo’s live guitar performance in emptiness and void, and no-dance movements from the four great “warriors” David Yeung, Dick Wong, Yuri Ng and Makoto Matsushima, and dancers of Dance Forum Taipei, co-creating a multimedia dance theatre with the negating logic built on “dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows”.
Dream Illusion Bubble Shadow contains five parts: “Thus”, “Dream”, “Illusion”, “Bubble” and “Shadow”.
“THUS”: What if everything begins from a spot of light. If wind is not wind; rain is not rain; cloud is not cloud; sky is not sky. If there is no beginning, there is no end. If coming is not coming, going is not going.
“DREAM”: A person sitting on a couch, dreaming like Freud, dreams of someone else dreaming in his dream. Life is a dream yet not a dream. Time is not time.
“ILLUSION”: fantasy; disillusionment; phantasm; hallucination; dreamland; unreal images; illusory manifestation...
“BUBBLE”: Vanished, it has vanished. Everything has vanished - disappearing in a mirror; in space; within everything - it has vanished. Vanishing is not disappearing. Existence is not existing. Existence has vanished.
“SHADOW”: shadow of an image being projected onto another shadow. Shadow versus light; light versus shadow. Light is light; shadow is shadow. There is shadow in light; yet no light in shadow. Light is not shadow; shadow has no light. This is how it is.
