20-22/10/2009

Presented & Produced by Zuni Icosahedron

Directed and designed by Mathias Woo, The Heart of Bach is the latest performance in Zuni's Multimedia Life Insight Theatre Series, whose debut took place in 2007. Inspired by the doctrine set out in the lines of The Heart Sūtra "form is emptiness and the very emptiness is form", the show will feature live performance by Korean cellist Yoohong Lee with reference to Bach's Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello as source material. Created with modern theatrical elements, the performance will present and explore how responses from our sensory organs and emotional reactions mutually interact with concepts and thoughts in our mind through the integration of scriptural recitation, multimedia theatrical effects and images. The aim is to develop the potential of art as a means of purification of the mind – triggering memory, guiding emotions, invigorating imagination, stimulating thinking, and then helping to perfect sentiments, elevate wisdom and awaken spiritual yearning, thus continuing the legacy of the interactive dialogue between art and religion. After each performance, there will be a session of talks on The Heart Sūtra and some general Buddhist doctrines as food for thought for the audience by Venerable Sik Hin Hung and Venerable KL Dhammajoti from the Centre of Buddhist Studies of the University of Hong Kong.
