Director's Note

"But we can all remember when we were infants, how for the first time we got up from the ground and stood wobbling on our feet, and experienced the joy and challenge of standing up on our own. Could this be, for all of us, the very first moment of 'Independence"?

At the moment of 'Independence', we can sense our feet touching the earth, in all intimacy. We experience the gravity, the balancing, and we begin to realise the coordination of will and action. We call this learning.

Everything starts with 'Du Li (Independence/standing on one's own).

"The profoundest feelings of producing One Hundred Years of Solitude are, apart from the lingering, clinging emotional bond, that every character, every episode in the novel reminds me of that wondrous experience when one gets up from the ground, wobbles on one's feet for the first time, determines to step forward with all one's might, energy and stubbornness; and to head towards a way of independence and solitude."
