Conceived from the fantasy novel, Grass Labyrinth, written by Kyoka Izumi (泉鏡花) at the beginning of 20th century, Grass Labyrinth: Water, Moon, Mirror, Flower is a collaboration of Zuni and Pappa Tarahumara, incorporating dance, multi-media art and drama.

The work borrows elements from Izumi Kyoka's tale. Placing an emphasis on the fantastic and grotesque, the story is broken down into four scenes: 水 mizu (water), 月 tsuki (moon), 鏡kagami (mirror), and 花 hana (flower). That is not only because these four elements are key motifs in the original story, but also because the four characters taken together signify "fantasy" in Chinese. And the alternate pronunciations of kagami and hana combine to form Kyoka's name. Classical Chinese literature contains a story called ring hua zhong (鏡花塚), which also depicts a labyrinth. These factors led to the choice of Izumi Kyoka's story as the basis for the collaboration between directors: Koike and Yung.
