In 1949, Mao chose three of his earlier short writings and called them the "Lao San Pien". These articles were distributed to his newly liberated mass as basic education agenda for the new nation. They were "To Serve the People" (1944), "In Memory of Dr Bethume" (1939) and "Foolish Old Man Moving the Mountain" (1945). There are certain uncertainties in the title "2 or 3 Scenes...Hong Kong," which indeed reflected my state of mind at the time. My approach to theatre-making is usually two-folded. I would always deal with what was bothering me most at the time and simultaneously deal with the physical or human constraints of the art form.

After outlining the basic framework of the two scenes, I then asked members of Zuni to develop whatever they saw fit and to handle their own workshops. With all the things happening on and off stage, inside and outside the arts field, it is rather difficult to be focused on developing just "a piece of work," a choreography or a sequence of activities on stage. It all seems so external and unimportant. Especially when one works on a title such as "the Revolution", so condescending, and contrive for the contemporary scene of Hong Kong.

I would sit around with the members and talk about the stage, constraints of the stage, the history, the physical set-up, the management and technical problems and other things; then somehow would come up with ideas of stage settings, forming the base, the environment for a yet to be developed presentation, The concept of foolish old man and how he dealt with his environment flashed through my mind.
