Sigmund Freud in Search of Chinese Matter and Mind
Hong Kong City Hall Theatre
1-3/2/2002

Presented & Produced by Zuni Icosahedron

Sigmund Freud in Search of Chinese Matter and Mind is a multi-media performance with Danny Yung as the artistic director, Mathias Woo as the director and stage installation designer and Yu Yat-yiu as the music director. Kun opera artist Shi Xiaomei plays the reversed and double reversed male and female roles in the performance.

Sigmund Freud is one of the most important psychologists in the 19th and early 20th Centuries and his publication: The Interpretation of Dreams is also one of the most influential works having great significance and impacts on human history. To reinterpret Chinese dreams through Freud's theories in a theatre, the Peony Pavilion is thus an appropriate choice for this topic since it is the most popular Chinese dream story of the 17th Century. After discussion with guest artist Shi Xiaomei, director Danny Yung decided to work on In Praise of the Portrait, an excerpt of singing and dance highlights from The Peony Pavilion. The scene describes how Liu Mengmei falls in love with the beautiful lady Du Liniang after seeing her portrait. Sigmund Freud in Search of Chinese Matter and Mind is a reinterpretation of this original solo scene through an experiment of multi-media.
